Best moments to enjoy it
Best enjoyed in the afternoon or after a meal, especially in Da Lat's cool highland weather
Origin & history
Avocados were introduced to Da Lat during the French colonial period and became a staple highland crop in Lam Dong Province. Local vendors began making kem bo (avocado ice cream) decades ago, and it became one of Da Lat's most recognizable and beloved food souvenirs for visitors.
How to order & pay
Order in a cup for easier eating while walking. Ask for 'kem bo dac biet' for a premium version with more avocado. Try it without extra toppings first to appreciate the natural flavor.
Most stalls are cash-only and prices are low. Bring small notes of 10,000-50,000 VND.
Allergens, nutrition & health
Allergens
May contain dairy; some versions use coconut milk for a lighter alternative; generally free of common allergens beyond milk
Nutrition & benefits
Provides healthy fats from avocado and calcium from milk; richer than sorbet but more nutritionally dense than regular ice cream due to avocado content
Health notes
High in healthy fats and moderately sweet. If you are lactose-intolerant, ask if a coconut-milk version is available.
How to eat it
Eat with a small spoon from the cup, or from a cone. Best enjoyed fresh and cold; do not let it sit in warm weather.
